Lifestyle Changes Are Hard

There was a time a very long time ago when I was going through a really rough time. I was sitting on the edge of my bed wondering how I could get some kind of money and one of those scam “lifestyle change” courses popped up in a youtube ad. It was a guy in nice clothes walking In front of a Ferrari talking about how he reads a book a day and he knows how I can get to where he is. And all I could think was “man he looks like he has it together I should listen to him. I almost bought into it because everything the guy was saying sounded like the answer to my problems. The reality of things like that ad or anyone saying they know how you can fix your life with 5 simple steps is that they know how to exploit the desperation of people going through rough times. If it doesn’t feel difficult to make the changes that you’re wanting to make in your life then you probably aren’t making lasting changes.

Alignment vs Goal Setting

How many times have you set a goal to do something that you wanted to turn into a complete lifestyle change like eating better or talking to your siblings more? And for a while it went well and then it was right back to the same program. Attempting to reach a goal can start out feeling great and get tiring after a while. In my opinion reaching a goal isn’t necessarily the same as making a lifestyle change. I’d even take it a step further and say that in my own experience reaching a goal has been the catalyst for me going back to the same habits. Because it almost feels like “alright I did it now I don’t have to do it again because I feel accomplished.”

Lately I’ve been thinking about alignment as it pertains to aligning with the best version of one’s self. I think about the “higher” version of me and the reasons that I consider it to be my higher self and the things that he would do in every day life. Instead of goal setting I have been asking myself “what would my higher self be doing right now?” And that motivates me to make a choice. I can either keep doing whatever it is that I’m doing; or I can do whatever the answer was to that question. I’ve found that making those multiple small “alignment” choices are a lot easier than trying to immediately jump for the moon and accomplish some big goal.

In my head every time I make a choice to be in alignment I see it as piecing together puzzle pieces of a better version of myself and it sticks better than accomplishing one off goals does. I’ve found it easier to get up early and go for walks because when my alarm goes off at 6am I think “would my higher self ignore that alarm or get up” and its a little easier to eat healthier because I ask myself “Does the higher version of my eat whatever and however or does he stick to his calorie limit?” It doesn’t seem like much of a difference but before I know it is been a couple weeks and I’m settling into a new routine and Im proud of the choices I’ve been making.

So what do you think about this notion? Is it easier for you to set goals or will you be going for the alignment route?
