What Is Your Why?
Firstly I know its been a while but it literally has to do with the topic so don’t be mad at me. Seriously don’t be mad at me stop looking at me like that I’m sorry. So I was struggling with my motivations for a while. When I say motivations I mean the reasons for doing what I do (videos, this letter etc.) Because we all have to have a reason for doing things otherwise right? And that what the problem. What reason is good enough for me to keep putting forth effort and doing my best especially when no one is telling me to? I’m not talking about a drastic extent or anything here just battling textbook laziness and procrastination.
I was finishing a video edit when I had a thought about a video breakdown that I saw someone do about the Dark Knight Trilogy (The Batman movies.) In the breakdown the person talking detailed how in the three movies Batman’s motivation for fighting crime shifted from him doing because he’s the “good guy” to doing it because he hates the bad guys and then finally to him doing what he does simply because that’s who he is.
What I gathered from that is that in the movies Batman goes from trying to cling to an identity to accepting himself as a, for lack of better description, force of nature. He had to abandon the title of being “the good guy” because some think he’s the bad guy and it made things conflicting for him. He had to abandon the motivation of fighting because he “hates the bad guys” because some of the bad guys had pure motivations for doing wrong. He had to accept that he believes in something and he fights for what he believes in simply because that’s who he is, and he continues on for the sake of continuing on and nothing more.
In acting class our coach teaches us that when we want to truly bring a character to life our motivations cant be third party. The motivations have to come from our core selves and only that. And what that plus the breakdown that I just shared has allowed me to take and apply to my own life is that my motivation has to come from something deep down and pure within myself. It cant be third party meaning it cant be something like “I want to help people” or “I want success.” I had to realize that all of that will come second nature if I’m doing what I believe in. I realized that I need to allow my motivation to be simple and pure. In the same way that the sun shines simply because that is what the sun does and the light and warmth we receive is secondary. And in the same way that the sun does not cease being the sun simply because its night time in part of the world, neither will I cease to be the force that I believe myself to be when I choose to rest. When a “why” doesn’t need to depend on anything else to exist that makes it perpetual and unwavering. Those are my thoughts for myself anyway. What is your “Why?”
